The first item of Green’s work I saw. I discovered while trawling the internet looking for references to John Kilby Green at 9 Thurlow Place. From such small acorns grow very large trees.

The poem reads:-

Dear maid your picture here behold,

As natural as life!

You think, your beauty, I am told,

Would make you a sweet wife.

But till you with more beauties strike,

The eye, I cannot tell,

\though very likely, I might like,

Your --- Pussey very well.

The poem reads:-

You seem to think that beauty Sir,

Consists in a monstrous lot,

Of hair!, But maidens don’t prefer,

A face like  - I don’t know what.

Your barber pretends to make you shine,

But he is a barbarous man.

For win with that face a Valentine,

I’m certain you never can.
