According to
George Speaight Arthur and Archibald Alexander Park were brothers. Arthur being
the founder member of the printing business and was responsible for the
majority of the works created and sold by the Parks. However it was Arthur who
emigrated to America in 1835 where he later died in 1863, leaving his brother
to run the business. Arthur quite probably left the business to Archibald as a
wedding present, the latter marrying on 1st September 1835 at St
Matthew’s Church in Bethnal Green. The 1841 Census shows one of the few
crossovers between the better-known publishing families, in that William Webb
appears to be Archibald’s apprentice.
The parents of
Archibald Alexander Park were Archibald Park and Mary Stuart.

Archibald Park was
buried at West Hackney on 28th December 1827 aged 67. His abode was
given as Roseberry Street, West Hackney.
A Park (Arthur Park 1815 to 1835)
So far I have discovered
nothing of Arthur Park, except the following:-
Kelly’s Directory for London 1841, has one Arthur Park, engraver &
publisher, resident at 47 Leonard St, Finsbury.

The Marriage for the above Banns does appear to have taken place. The
entry has the word “Out” listed beside, which seems to indicate some form of
problem. Was one of the parties already married? Or, more likely, was this just
a jilted relationship.

AA Park seems to have problems getting to the Altar, as again I can find
no corresponding marriage. However two years later he tries again for the third
time and again with Sarah Prosser. This time there is a corresponding marriage.
Archibald Park
became the Rate Payer for 47 Leonard Street in 1834, taking over from William
Prosser, his father-in-law, whom has been the Rate Payer at that address since
1816. This Archibald Park was obviously Archibald Alexander Park, who married
Sarah Prosser in 1835.

Maria Prosser was almost certainly Sarah’s sister.
William Webb became apprenticed to Archibald Park of 47 Leonard Street on 23rd September 1835.
Kelly’s Directory for London 1846, has one Arch. Alex Park, engraver
& publisher, resident at 47 Leonard St, Finsbury.
The same entry appears in 1848 & 1852.

Mrs Sarah Park (1863 to 1867)
Presumably this
was Sarah Park, Archibald Alexander Park’s widow. If this is the case then from
the 1861 Census Return it would appear that Archibald Alexander Park died
before 7th April 1861, when the Census was held.
A Park (Alexander Park 1867 to 1880)
Presumably
Alexander was Archibald Alexander Park’s son.

Alexander Park’s
son Archibald Alexander Park still lived in West Ham in 1901 and continued his father’s
trade of “Lithographic Printer”. Also living with him was his wife and two
children and his brother Henry, who worked as a “Commercial Traveller”.
